Lankesh Chitra Prashasthi (15Feb)

Calling for entries of Films made by Debut Directors across India for
Lankesh Chitra Prashasthi

Lankesh Chitra Prashasti, an award constituted in the name of Late
P. Lankesh one of the literary giants of Karnataka is inviting all debut directors in any Indian language to submit their film in DVD or CD format preferably with English sub titles before the 15th of February 2007.

The award will consist of a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 a silver medal on the lines of the national Rajat Kamal award and a citation. The award will be given on the 8th of March every year at a function organized for the celebration of Mr.P.Lankesh's birthday. The award winning film will be screened the same evening for the press and the public.

Malayalam film Sancharram won the award for 2004-2005 and Bengali film Herbert won the award for 2005 - 2006.

P.Lankesh was one of the literary giants of Karnataka. A
multi-faceted personality, he was at once a leading writer, a popular journalist and a creative filmmaker. Known as the angry young man of Kannada literature in his youth, Lankesh went on to win the central Sahitya academy award, established the largest selling Kannada Weekly magazine and won both national and state awards for his films.

Through all his creative efforts, Lankesh became an icon for a
staunch secular stand, anti establishment viewpoint and as the voice for the voiceless such as the poor, the down trodden and the minorities. To this day, Lankesh is remembered in Karnataka not only for his award winning literature but also for being the conscience of the thinking people of the state.

P. Lankesh passed away at the age of 65 in the year 2000. In his remembrance, his daughter Kavitha Lankesh has constituted this award. Incidentally, Lankesh had won the national award for his very first film 'Pallavi'.

Kavitha Lankesh too had won the national award for her debut film 'Deveeri' based on Lankesh's novel. That is why we think it is apt that we should confer this award on a debut director. We hope this award will not only encourage new talent but will also go a long way in improving the quality of Indian cinema.
